Tree service in Sandy Springs, GA

We remove and trim big trees in Sandy Springs, and we plan every job around the city's tree permit. Call or text (678) 491-1254 for a free written estimate. We answer any hour after storms.

Sandy Springs is one of the most wooded cities in metro Atlanta. Its 2023 canopy study measured 54.5% tree cover across the city (Rough Draft Atlanta). In neighborhoods like Riverside, Huntcliff, Heards Ferry and North Springs, that means tall oaks and poplars right over large homes, steep lots running down toward the Chattahoochee, and very little room to drop a tree. Most jobs here are climbing and rigging work: the climber takes the tree down from the top and lowers every piece with ropes.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree here?

Yes, for larger trees. Sandy Springs requires a Tree Removal Permit for any tree 18 inches or more in diameter, dogwoods and redbuds 10 inches or more, and any tree in a stream buffer or the Chattahoochee River Corridor (City of Sandy Springs).

  • Stream buffer and river corridor: any tree within 75 feet of a stream, or within 2,000 feet of the Chattahoochee, needs a permit regardless of size.
  • Landmark trees: hardwoods 27 inches and up, pines 30 inches and up, and dogwoods and redbuds 10 inches and up, in fair or better condition. Each one removed needs 1.5 replacement trees.
  • The 35% canopy rule: homes must keep 35% canopy cover. Each tree 18 inches and up counts as 1,000 square feet. If a removal drops your lot below 35%, the city requires $1,200 per tree into the City Tree Fund plus one replacement tree each.
  • Replacement trees must be at least 2.5-inch caliper, large-canopy species, kept alive for three growing seasons.
  • Dead or hazardous trees don't need a permit, but you must send documentation (photos, or an arborist report) to the City Arborist and get approval before removal.
  • Questions go to the City Arborist through 770-730-5600.

When we come out, we'll measure the trees with you, tell you which ones need a permit, and give you the photos and details for the application.

Trees, storms and power lines in this area

Hurricane Helene dropped 8 to 11 inches of rain on Sandy Springs in September 2024. The city removed 56 trees that fell onto public roads and sidewalks, and downed trees and lines closed Riverside Drive (Rough Draft Atlanta). Big, saturated trees on river slopes are the ones that go over. If one leans toward your house, have it looked at before the next storm.

Sandy Springs has been a Tree City USA for more than a decade (City of Sandy Springs). That's why the permit rules are strict, and why good trimming that keeps a healthy tree standing is often the better choice.

Watch your pines. Georgia logged more than 1,600 southern pine beetle spots in 2024, up from 273 the year before (UGA Bugwood Center). Needles browning from the top down and small lumps of sap on the bark are the signs. Beetle-killed pines dry out and get brittle fast, so they should come down soon.

Do you do emergency tree removal in Sandy Springs?

Yes. Call (678) 491-1254 any hour, including nights, weekends and holidays. If a tree is on your house, car or driveway, we'll tell you on the phone how soon we can get there and what to do until we arrive. If the tree is touching a power line, call your power company first.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Sandy Springs?

Yes, if the tree is 18 inches or more in diameter, a dogwood or redbud 10 inches or more, or anywhere in a stream buffer or the Chattahoochee River Corridor. Smaller trees outside those areas don't need one.

What is the $1,200 tree fund fee?

Homes must keep 35% canopy cover. If removing a protected tree (18 inches and up) drops your lot below 35%, the city requires $1,200 per tree into the City Tree Fund, plus a replacement tree.

Can I remove a dead tree without a permit?
