Johns Creek neighborhoods like St. Ives, Country Club of the South and the subdivisions off Medlock Bridge and State Bridge were built around mature hardwoods and pines, many near the Chattahoochee. These are big trees close to big houses, so most jobs here are climbing and rigging work.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree here?

It depends. Johns Creek eased its residential tree rules in July 2025, and for many homeowners a dangerous tree can now come down without a permit. On a developed single-family lot, removal "is permitted without a tree removal permit" when the tree is not in a protected zone and "poses an immediate threat or danger to falling on the primary residential dwelling" (Johns Creek tree preservation guide).

  • A specimen tree is a large hardwood or softwood 32 inches or more in diameter, or a small native flowering tree 12 inches or more.
  • Pines are no longer specimen trees, as of the July 28, 2025 change (Appen Media).
  • Removing a healthy specimen tree requires replanting one 15-gallon or 1 to 1.5-inch caliper tree for each one removed.

Questions go to the city's Community Development department. Trees in stream buffers or other protected zones still need approval.

Trees, storms and power lines in this area

With pines off the specimen list, many Johns Creek homeowners are finally taking down the tall pines over their houses. Lots near the Chattahoochee and its creeks often have buffers, so tell us if your tree is near water.

Watch your pines. Georgia logged more than 1,600 southern pine beetle spots in 2024, up from 273 the year before (UGA Bugwood Center). Needles browning from the top down and small lumps of sap on the bark are the signs. Beetle-killed pines dry out and get brittle fast, so they should come down soon.

Georgia Power serves most of Johns Creek, and Sawnee EMC serves parts of north Fulton.

Lines that run pole to pole belong to the power company. Don't trim near them yourself and don't let anyone else. Call the number on your power bill first. Once the line is safe, we handle the rest of the tree.
