Duluth has a mix of older lots near downtown and Rogers Bridge Park and newer subdivisions along Sugarloaf Parkway and Pleasant Hill Road. Older lots tend to have big oaks and poplars; newer ones have pines that were left standing during construction and now tower over the houses.
No. The City of Duluth does not require a permit to remove trees on a single-family home lot. The city says so plainly: "No permit is required for the removal of trees at single-family residential properties in the City of Duluth" (City of Duluth).
Two things to know. Properties that aren't single-family homes need written approval from Community Development before trees come down. And the city expects owners not to keep dead or hazardous trees that threaten neighbors or the street. Your HOA may still have its own rules.
Because there's no permit step for homeowners, a Duluth removal can usually be scheduled as soon as you approve the price. Tell us if the tree is near a shared fence line, so we can plan where the pieces come down.
Watch your pines. Georgia logged more than 1,600 southern pine beetle spots in 2024, up from 273 the year before (UGA Bugwood Center). Needles browning from the top down and small lumps of sap on the bark are the signs. Beetle-killed pines dry out and get brittle fast, so they should come down soon.
Duluth is in Gwinnett's territory for four power companies: Georgia Power, Jackson EMC, Sawnee EMC and Walton EMC (Gwinnett County). Your bill shows which one you have.
Lines that run pole to pole belong to the power company. Don't trim near them yourself and don't let anyone else. Call the number on your power bill first. Once the line is safe, we handle the rest of the tree.
